Investigators (Ages 3-4)

Half-day, week long camps that last from 9:00am-11:00am, with optional aftercare from 11:00am-noon.
Pre-K, campers must be toilet trained.

Science Kaleidoscope
Week 1 (FULL: WAIT LIST ONLY)
Week 9
Description: Find out how much fun the world can be when you think like a scientist! Put on your lab coat and googles as we plant a seed and watch it grow, go on a fossil hunt, play with magnets and magnifying glasses, and use chemistry to make our own silly putty.

Wacky Weather
Week 3
Description: Explore the seasons and the wacky weather that accompanies them. Experience an entire year of weather in a week as we make rain in a jar, go on a summer insect safari, make our own wind socks, play with magic snow, and much more.

Water Wonders
Week 5
Description: Wade your way through this water camp. Children can explore the wonders of water while conducting super soaked experiments. We'll see if we can fill a beaker over the top with water -- without spilling over. We'll also try to build a boat and see if it will float, play with frozen bubbles, and explore what lives in the ponds around the Science Factory.

Sights and Sounds
Week 6
Description: Explore the worlds of light, shadow, color and sound! Use periscopes, mirrors and magnifying glasses to let you see things you normally could not. We'll learn how sunlight and rain create a rainbow, make a kazoo, play with different instruments to see how they make sounds, and more!

Animal Adventures (FULL: WAIT LIST ONLY)
Week 7
Description: Learn all about animals in this wild camp! Make ears that will let you hear like a bat, play a game where you pretend to be an anteater picking up the ants with a sticky tongue, find out what different baby animals look like, and meet a KinderCritter from Nearby Nature.


Explorers (Ages 5-7)

Half-day, week long camps that last from 9:00am-noon or from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Lunch care available between noon and 1 pm.
K-1st grade, campers should have the ability to manipulate scissors and simple puzzles.

Science Superstars for Girls (FULL: WAIT LIST ONLY)
Week 1 am
Description: This camp is similar to Science Superstars, but for girls only. Bake a cookie using solar energy, use a stream table to discover how a grain of sand can travel from a mountain to the ocean, explore how different animals make their homes, and more. Along with other activities, girls who participate will be able to meet women scientists who are doing research at the University of Oregon.

Desert Safari

Description: In this camp we will explore desert habitats to learn how plants and animals can survive in extreme climate conditions. Compete in a hopping race to see if you can outjump a kangaroo, use a compass and other gear to go on a pretend desert safari, meet live cacti and snakes that live in the desert environments, and more!

Grossology

Description: Discover the science behind all your favorite gross things. Create a wide variety of slimes, dissect a pellet of hair and bones coughed up by a real owl, learn what makes your body create gas, and much more!

Crazy Chemistry *

Description: Does it fizz, bubble or ooze? Is it a solid, liquid or gas? Get chemically creative throughout this exciting week of zany experiments as we use familiar household items to produce interesting chemical reactions and experiments.

Build it, Race it, Fly it! *

Description: You will only be limited by your imagination in this camp, where we construct machines that move with many different types of materials. Build a roller coaster, a catapult, a parachute, various boats, an energy efficient car, and much more.

Description: Learn about saber-toothed smilodons, wooly mammoths and other amazing animals of the past, such as the terror bird, a prehistoric flightless predator. Try experiments to see how animals become preserved in ice, amber and tar pits, meet a real paleontologist, and more.

Description: You're in for some shocking discoveries as we investigate the fascinating world of electricity. Make your own generator using magnets and wire, dissect a battery and a light bulb to see how they work, experiment with using wind, water and solar energy to generate electricity, and much more. Underwater Adventures
Week 9 pm
Description: Take a trip to the ocean without leaving Eugene. Search for sea creatures found on the beach and in tidepools, examine how a sea turtle's shell protects it while still allowing it to swim, find out about some ocean oddities such as narwhals, sea horses and hammerhead sharks, and much more.


Seekers (Ages 7-9)

Half-day, week long camps that last from 9:00am-noon or from 1:00pm-4:00pm. Lunch care available between noon and 1 pm.
2nd-3rd grade, campers should have the ability to read and be self-guided on projects after receiving direction.

Girls' Science Lab
Week 2 am
Description: This camp allows girls to explore the world while thinking like a scientist. Learn how to identify an animal by looking at tracks and other clues, try different tests to discover which chemicals are in a substance, meet women scientists who are doing research at the University of Oregon, and much more. For girls only.

Big Bang (FULL: WAIT LIST ONLY)

Description: Explore the universe in a space camp that is out of this world! We will use a vacuum to simulate a black hole, operate a space robot, get an up close look at galaxies and nebula clusters as you watch a planetarium show in the new Exploration Dome, and much more.

Planes, Trains, Cars and Cranes *

Description: Be an engineer on all your favorite forms of transportation. Use a tea kettle to move a wheel like a steam engine on an old fashioned train, try experiments to see how airplane and truck designs reduce friction to make them faster, find out how engineers have built trains that float in the air over magnets, and more.

Computer Whiz Kids

Description: The perfect beginner's course in computers! Learn computer basics about hardware, software,, making your own computer art and how to surf the internet. Join in the fun as we explore the world of computers through educational programs and web sites.

Ocean Animals (FULL: WAIT LIST ONLY)
Week 4 am
Description: Explore the many ecosystems that can be found in the ocean. We'll look at animals form the surface to the deep ocean to see how they interact with each other, who eats whom, how anything can survive in a place without sunlight, and what can happen to a marine ecosystem when one species is removed through overfishing.

Super Computer Whiz Kids

Description: For kids who already know how to use the internet, save a file, and make a drawing on their computer, and want to learn more. Learn how to use Google Earth to see your house from space, explore programs that allow you to do funny things with photographs, make a CD of songs and design your own label and CD cover, and much more.

Description: In this camp we will build the craziest invention ever! We'll start off examining simple machines such as pulleys, levers, gears and springs. We will then use them to build our own Rube Goldberg invention, similar to the one in the OK Go Rube Goldberg machine video that is popular on YouTube.

Science of Magic
Week 6 am
Description: Discover how illusions and magic tricks fool our brains. Make a pinhole camera to learn how the eye works and then make a stop-motion animated movie using clay figurines. You'll find out how movies trick our eyes into thinking you are seeing fluid motion. You'll also learn some cool illusions and science tricks that seem like magic that you can show your friends.

Description: Explore the world of alternative energies! Help to build a model renewable energy house and then experiment in a variety of ways to use solar and wind energy to heat and power it. Discoverers (Ages 9-11)

Description: So you want to get creative with your computer? This is the camp for you! Learn about graphic design by working on posters, banners and cards on a computer. Desgin crazy pictures using digital photographs and Photoshop. Then you will create an advertisement for the Science Factory and the best ones will appear on our web site. Digital cameras are recommended but not required.

Mythbusters (FULL: WAIT LIST ONLY)

Description: Use science to test whether the things you hear on TV or from your friends are true or not. We will test products to see if they are really as good as their commercials claim, use solar beads to see if it is possible to get sunburned through a window, find out of Pop Rocks and soda reallly can make a stomach explode, and much more.

Movies and Music
Week 3 am

Description: This computer camp is an introduction to the Mac applications GarageBand and iMovie, and will teach you how to make simple music tracks and movies, and then combine them together to make your own short music video.

Cats and Dogs
Week 3 pm
Description: If you've considered becoming a veterinarian, this class if for you. We will visit Santa Clara Animal Hospital which specializes in exotic pets such as snakes, turtles, birds and fish. Get behind the scenes at the Lane County Animal Shelter. Plus, you'll meet Rosy boa, some leopard geckos and Cosmos, the adorable pooch!

CSI: Science Factory *

Description: Use deductive reasoning and scientific methods to uncover facts at a Science Factory crime scene. We'll investigate methods of evidence collection, as well as tools and techniques that forensic scientists use to solve mysteries. All clues point to a spine-tingling, crime-solving camp!

Forces of Nature
Week 5 am
Description: Learn why Oregon has volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes! You will take a field trip to Skinner Butte to meet a University of Oregon volcanologist, then having a video conference with scientists on the marine geology research vessel the JOIDES Resolution while it is out at sea. You will also make your own tsunamis, learn about plate tectonics with experiments you can eat, make a model of an underwater volcano and watch it erupt, and more! Who are the Scientists? Food Detectives *

Description: In this camp we will discover where food really comes from. Campers will make a variety of simple dishes and then explore how the ingredients in them traveled from nature to our dinner plates, and what changes have happened to them along the way.

Description: In this awesome camp, we'll explore the computer as an educational tool through totally hands-on projects. Use Google Earth to explore the solar system, create an amazing slide show on iMovie, test and rate games on the internet, and more.

Description: Learn all about the ecology of Oregon. Discover what owls eat as you pull apart an owl pellet, become a salmon and find out the difficulties they encounter as you race in our Salmon Run, take a trip to West Eugene Wetlands to visit some important Oregon habitats, and more. Description: In this camp you will learn the skills necessary to be a webmaster, while creating your own awesome web site. Learn how to develop eye-catching web designs. Discover how to incorporate videos, flash animation and mp3s to make surfing your web site a totally gnarly experience.

Climate Change and Sustainability

Week 3 am
Description: Change the way you think about the climate and explore real stories of sustainability. This camp highlights or visits several local businesses who have stepped up to this challenge, whether with waste management or fuel cells. The folks at Biosequential will show us how they save energy and the environment with solar panels, earth friendlier foods and a "living roof." You will also meet a scientist from the University of Oregon who is researching how climate change is affecting the rivers in our area. Learn about the properties of carbon dioxide while conducting experiments with dry ice. Blend a summer treat with pedal power. Bake cookies using the greenhouse effect. Build a simple generator to see how we produce electricity and then test different energy sources such as solar, wind and fuel cells to see which contributes the least to global warming, and more! Our Planet Earth

Week 3 pm
Description: The Pacific Ocean now contains an area of water twice the size of Texas that is filled with plastic and pollution known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the Gulf of Mexico currently has the largest oil spill in US history. In this camp you will learn to celebrate the diversity of ocean life and understand our impact on the oceans. You will video conference with a Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist who was on SEAPLEX, the first scientific expedition to study the Pacific Garbage Patch. Then meet a green chemist from the University of Oregon to learn about the sustainability of plastics. Create a model landscape to see how litter around the Science Factory can make it to the ocean and conduct experiments to see how oil in water affects bird feathers and what it takes to clean the oil up. We will end camp by putting together an exhibit in the Science Factory to teach others what we can do to stop polluting our ocean. Movie Makers (Full day)
Week 4
Description: This all-day, computer-based class will fire up your imagination as we introduce you to the creative possibilities of Mac's iMovie software. We'll examine the basic elements of film production, including storyboarding, set design, costuming, make up, filming and film editing as you create your own movie in this full-day camp. Digital camcorder recommended, but not required.

Advanced Movie Makers (Full day)
Week 6
Description: For kids already familiar with Mac's iMovie software, this all-day, computer-based class will allow you to jump right into movie-making while learning some new techniques with green screens, special effects, sound and editing. Digital camcorder recommended, but not required.

GarageBand (Full day)
Week 8
Description: Join local musician/teacher Matt Symonds for a workshop on how to use the application GarageBand to turn a Mac into a miniature music studio. Campers will be able to create their own music tracks while learning the basics of GarageBand, and will receive a CD of the music they create to share with their family and friends.
