2009 Summer Camp Descriptions


Investigators (Ages 3-5)

Half-day, week long camps that last from 9:00am-11:00am, with aftercare from 11:00am-noon

Amazing Animals!
Week 3
Week 5
Explore all about animals in this wild camp! Go on an insect safari, touch real shark teeth and get up close and personal with the Science Factory’s live snakes and lizards.

Eyes, Nose, Ears, Toes
Week 2
Week 6
Discover more about how your body works! Listen to your heart and put together a skeleton. Find out what makes you unique as we take a close look at your fingerprints! Explore your five senses while having fun doing many hands-on science projects.

Splish Splash
Week 4
Week 8
Wade your way through this wacky water camp. Children can explore the wonders of water while conducting super-soaked experiments. Play with steam-filled bubbles and see if you can make a bubble that is larger than you are! You will get wet in this wonderfully water-filled camp, so bring a change of dry clothes!

Super Science Spectacular

Week 7
Find out how much fun the world can be when you think like a scientist! Put on your lab coat and goggles and explore chemical and physical reactions that fizz, ooze and slime! Plant a seed, make magic snow, play with magnets and launch a balloon rocket.


Explorers (Ages 6-8)

Half-day, week long camps that last from 9:00am-noon or from 1:00pm-4:00pm

Astro-nuts*

Explore the galaxy and beyond in a space camp that is out of this world! Make your own telescope to explore the stars, planets and galaxies far, far away. Learn about astronauts' adventures as they explore the universe. Decorate and launch your very own water rocket. Get an up close look at the stars as you watch a planetarium show!

Build it, Race it, Fly it!
Week 2 pm
Week 8 am
You will only be limited by your imagination in this camp where we construct machines with many different types of materials. Build a roller coaster to learn about acceleration and momentum. Build and race a solar-powered car. See if you can build the tallest building and the strongest bridge.

Computer Whiz Kids
Week 1 pm
Week 4 am
The perfect beginner’s course in computers! Learn computer basics including hardware components, software programs, graphics and how to surf the Internet. Join the fun as we explore the world of computers through educational software and websites.

Crazy Critters
Week 3 am
Week 5 am
Spend some time learning about interesting creatures that you don’t see every day! Meet some live insects and reptiles, feed a carnivorous plant, see what snakeskin looks like under a microscope and see if sea-monkeys are really monkeys. This camp is guaranteed to get you excited about new creatures!

Dino Diggers
Week 4 am
Explore the forbidding world of dinosaurs. Go on a dinosaur dig, build a model of a pteronadon skeleton that you can take home and see how big a T. Rex was. Beware, some live Triassic triops, animals that lived during the time of the dinosaurs, will be right in the classroom.

Jolts and Volts
Week 1 am
Week 7 pm
You’re in for some shocking discoveries as we investigate the fascinating world of electricity. Have a hair-raising experience with our Van de Graaff generator. Test household appliances to see how much energy they use. Enjoy a cookie baked in a solar-powered oven.

Mad Scientist’s Lab *

Week 8 pm
Does it fizz, bubble or ooze? Is it a solid, liquid or gas? Get chemically creative throughout this exciting week of zany experiments as we use normal household items to produce interesting chemical reactions and experiments.

Oregon Explorers
Week 5 pm
Learn all about the scientific wonders of Oregon! Make your own volcano and watch it erupt. Discover what owls eat as you pull apart an owl pellet. Become a salmon and find out the difficulties they encounter as you race in our Salmon Run. Take a trip to West Eugene Wetlands to visit some important Oregon habitats.

Pop Fizz Boom *

Pump up the volume with a variety of extreme experiments as you learn more about chemistry, biology and earth science! Does it pop, fizz or boom? From chemical reactions to geodes to wild weather—this camp has science covered!

Super Computer Whiz Kids *
Week 7 am
Week 9 pm
For kids that already know their way around a computer and want to learn about all the amazing things computers can do. Receive your very own Webkinz on the first day of camp and use it to interact with kids from around the world! Learn about web safety. Make a CD with all of your favorite songs and design your own label and CD cover.

Underwater Adventures

Week 6 pm
Take a trip to the ocean without leaving Eugene! Examine sea creatures big and small, from wondrous whales to tiny starfish. Play with real shark teeth while learning about ocean food chains. Put your ocean education to use and feel the pull of the tide in the wave pool when we visit Splash Water Park on Friday!



Discoverers (Ages 9 -11)

Computer Whiz

In this awesome camp, we’ll explore the computer as an educational tool through totally hands-on projects! Create your own amazing PowerPoint presentation. Pump up the volume as we learn the basics of iTunes. Surf the Web exploring search engines and other helpful Web sites, test and rate games, and more!

Creative Graphic Design *
Week 1 am
Week 4 pm
So you want to get creative with your computer? This is the camp for you! Learn how to create stickers and cards on your computer. Design crazy pictures using digital photographs and graphics software. Create a CD cover and label for your favorite band. Digital cameras are recommended, but not required.

CSI: Science Factory
Week 6 am
Week 8 pm
Use deductive reasoning and scientific methods to uncover facts at a Science Factory crime scene. We’ll investigate methods of evidence collection, as well as tools and techniques that forensic scientists use to solve mysteries. All clues point to a spine-tingling, crime-solving camp!

Energized
Week 2 am
Week 5 pm
Explore the options that exist for energy! Learn how electricity is produced, make a hydroelectric dam and then visit the Leaburg dam. Make a wind generator, a solar-powered car and enjoy a bike-blended smoothie.

Going Green
Week 4 pm
Week 9 am
Find out ways to solve environmental problems and help the earth. Build a water purifier that runs on solar power. Visit the Cascades Raptor Center to see how it promotes the conservation of threatened species. Conduct experiments to see how climate change affects our planet and learn how to cut your carbon footprint!

Harry Potter’s Magic
Week 1 pm
Week 8 am
Take the Science Factory’s versions of Hogwarts classes: Charms, Potions and Herbology. Make things levitate and move without touching them. Mix potions that bubble, ooze and foam. Discover real plants that eat insects. Explore the many science principles behind the magic of Harry Potter.

Kitchen Concoctions*
Week 4 am
Week 6 pm
Cook up some fun as you experiment with slimy, fizzy, smelly and tasty creations. Discover the links between cooking and chemistry, using common items from your kitchen cupboard! Use a magnet to see if there really is iron in cereal. Come hungry: you can even eat some of your experiments!

Pirates of the Willamette *
Week 7 am
Ahoy, mateys!! Climb aboard this camp to explore the science and technology of sailing the seas! Experiment with ship-building techniques. Build your own telescope and sextant and then visit the planetarium to learn how sailors navigate using the stars. Finish the week having fun with physics while flinging vegetables with a trebuchet!

Rock Out!
Week 3 am
Uncover the intriguing world of rocks, minerals and fossils. Grow and observe several crystal formations. We’ll be discovering the many minerals and metals in our daily lives, participating in a fossil dig, rock hounding and hearing from special guest geologists.

Star Wars Science *
Week 2 pm
Week 5 am
The force will be with you in this fun science camp. Shoot your own laser, and work together to build a robot. Explore other planets for alien life as you watch a planetarium show about weather! Then build your own rocket and watch it blast off!



Adventurers (Ages 12-14)

Half-day, week long camps that last from 9:00am-noon or from 1:00pm-4:00pm or full-day week long camps that last from 9:00am-4:00pm.

Climate Change and Sustainability
PhotoWeek 3 pm
Learn about the science of climate change and what you can do to slow global warming. See how a solar-oven works like greenhouse gases. Experiment with dry ice to see how excess carbon dioxide impacts the ocean. Learn about alternative sources of energy as we visit the Leaburg hydroelectric dam and you make a smoothie while pedaling a bicycle.

GPS Treasure Hunters (Half day)
Week 3 am
In this camp we will search for hidden treasure while participating in the thrilling game of Geocaching. You will start off learning basic orienteering skills and exploring the marvelous functions of a GPS unit. You will then use these skills to search for what is hidden in Eugene. Have fun and learn how never to get lost again.

Movie Makers (Full day)
Week 2
Week 5
This all-day, computer-based class will fire-up your imagination as you create your own movie using Mac’s iMovie software! We’ll examine the basic elements of film production including storyboarding, set design, costuming, makeup, filming and film editing in this full-day camp. Digital camcorder recommended, but not required.


Web Designers (Full Day)
Week 6
In this camp you will learn skills necessary to be a webmaster while creating your own awesome website. Learn how to develop eye-catching web designs. Discover how to incorporate videos, flash animation and mp3s to make surfing your website a totally gnarly experience.
