E-Newsletter October E-News, 2005 KEEP YOUR EAR TO THE GROUND THIS FRIDAY… DISCOVERY DAY THIS FRIDAY First Friday of October means fun with sound! Come join local musician and funster Rich Glauber this Friday, October 7 when the Science Factory opens early especially for you and your pre-schooler! (Accompanied children ages 5 and under only). Rich will lead some of our own sound making (or, as he calls it, “Music-In-Action!”) and then visitors can travel through the museum to see different fun stations and exhibits related to sound. If you want to be sure you are here for Rich, his performances will begin at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Try your hand at our instrument table set up for the day, or explore sound manipulation at our new exhibit, “Sound-a-Rama.” See how far sound travels with our giant ear. Plenty of fun for everyone. The museum opens its doors especially for this age-set from 10 AM – 12 Noon. Feel free to stay longer, as the museum remains open until 4 PM. * Science Factory members receive FREE admission! Non-member parent/child combo is $10 with each additional child $2. Classes Abound for Every Interest – Sign up Today! Figure out the nocturnal nature of bats. Explore what makes insects buggy. Or take a look at how your heart works. We’ll be exploring these topics in our Magic School Bus classes on both Wednesdays and Thursdays for our kick-off October series of classes. Take your pick from a range of times and days. Each three-week session lasts for two hours and uses hands-on exploration for fun and exciting inquiry. Geared for children in grades K-2, the first series will explore insects, bats, and circulation. For the older set (Grades 3-5), the world of computer art and design will be yours for creating! Make magnets, stickers and a t-shirt transfer in our newly upgraded computer lab. Visit: www.sciencefactory.org/programs/ for a complete explanation of our Magic School Bus and Science Adventures Workshops programs. Register today, as these programs fill up quickly. Or call 682-7888 for more information. Notice the Orange/Black Theme Here? It’s Halloween Extravaganza Time! Fling a pumpkin with our pumpkin catapult! Listen to spooky stories told by master storyteller Louisa-Lindsay Sprouse! Get your imagination in gear to create the best costume ever for our costume contest! Watch a planetarium show that gives you the astronomical legends behind Halloween! Concoct your own slithery solution in our Mad Scientist’s Lab! Crawl through our Halloween Hall of Horrors! Need we say more? It all happens here at the museum on Friday, October 28 from 5 PM - 8 PM. Don’t even think about missing this great 3rd Annual event! Museum members receive entry for a family of four for $10. Non-members, $12. Additional family members $4. Teachers: In-Service Day at the Science Factory Calling all teachers! The Science Factory will provide a free teacher training on everything you need to know about bringing your class to the Science Factory on Friday, October 14! You’ll be treated to a peek at our newest exhibit, given some concepts about how to “pre-teach” prior to coming here, and delighted with a look at the stars in our Planetarium and how to talk to kids about astonomy. Come at 10 AM or 2 PM to receive your tour of our facility and learn more about making the most of your field trip visit here. Let us know if you are planning on visiting. Call 682-7888. Hope to see you. Sportsology Supporters, Hooray! Many thanks to University of Oregon athletes, Dylann Tharp (soccer), Emily Marrer (soccer) and Andy Young (track & field) who competed with Science Factory members during the special members-only opening of this great exhibit. And also thanks to U-O Football/Basketball/Track athlete Jordan Kent for providing his voice and energy for radio ads now up and running on area stations. We hope to continue to provide a variety of fun events in connection with this great exhibit exploring the science behind sports. And of course, we wish to acknowledge the following business sponsors. Your support is critical to the continuing upgrade in quality and reach of our museum offerings: Timber Products Company University of Oregon Intercollegiate Athletics ESPN+/Oregon Sports Network Downtown Athletic Club Sponsorship opportunities are still available for Sportsology, which will be here at the museum until June. Please consider a business or personal donation for this educational opportunity for all area youth. MOWERS MADE OUR SUMMER! Summer is over and the grass growing slows down. The season change gives us the opportunity to give a heartfelt thank you to Grant’s Landscaping, which generously provided their services to maintain the tremendous amount of grass on our property. The quality and consistency of this service provided another overall upgrade to the Science Factory premises. In case readers are wondering, though the Science Factory sits in Alton Baker Park, jurisdiction for maintenance and upkeep remains with the museum. BLAST OFF YOUR SCIENCE EXPERIMENT…TRULY NASA is looking for your child’s science experiment to go up in space!
