FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS, IT’S A SOLAR SYSTEM EVENT WORTH NOTING Early risers will want to watch the eastern sky just before dawn from December 8th through the 11th. The planets Jupiter, Mercury and Mars will form a tight triangle in the pre-dawn eastern sky. Through a pair of binoculars, they will be especially spectacular since Mars will appear pretty faint and may be difficult to see without their aid. Mercury and Jupiter will be especially close together on the 10th of December -- providing a truly awesome sight in the rosy glow just before sunrise. AURORA: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS The spectacular, awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis is a natural occurrence created when solar particles collide with gas molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere. It occurs in our own Oregon sky up to 10 times per year. Learn the origins, peculiarities, and best times and places to see the Aurora in this fascinating show, continuing through January. The show continues every weekend on Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM.Planetarium Director Sue Peterson has created this show to entertain and enlighten. All of our shows are live and interactive and the audience has a chance to ask questions of Sue after her presentation. Try and stump her! HATS OFF… Hats off to Advisory Board member Betty Snowden for repeatedly airing a story concerning the Science Factory this fall! Betty blitzed the airwaves with Science Factory snippets. Thank you Betty! Hats off to KVAL-TV for upgrading a PSA for the Science Factory just in time for gift giving holiday season. They’ve changed our PSA to say that the Science Factory has “gift giving down to a science!.” We hope so. BRAIN FOOD How do bridges work?
