(12 Noon - 4 PM) Monday, February 20 Busy Brains on No School Day: Sports Mania (8:30 - 4 PM) TOUCH-A-SNAKE, LIZARD OR TOAD TOMORROW! Our friends from the Oregon Herpetological Society will pull out the reptiles and amphibians and be on hand to give advice on caring for these creatures, in addition to explaining their habitats, behaviors and more. We'll also creating our own rattle snake rattles out of some common household objects. Check out our new expanding iguanas in the Gift Shop too! SCIENCE FICTION FOR NO SCHOOL DAY Spend your no-school day exploring the universe with a computer based webquest, music, art, writing and more! Our all day "Busy Brains on No-School Days" series is sure to be an all-day adventure. Collaborating with Young Writers Association, our special day should be out of this world! $30 Members, $35 Non-Members. Pre-registration only. Next Friday, February 3. UNDER THE SEA FOR TOT DISCOVERY DAY Touch and pet sea creatures in tide pools, sort shells, create your own fish on a stick and other ocean animals, hear a dramatic reading of The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, create your own fishy stories on felt boards, and experience the wonderful world of the deep sea when you swim like a fish and glide like a dolphin with interpretative movement activities! Friday February 3, 10 AM – 12 PM. Children 5 and under ONLY. We recommend children who are older and out of school that day sign up for our No School Day program. Please remember that we cannot allow older children into the museum on that morning, as the museum is made available for this smaller age group only during that time. SATURN SHOW A HIT! Our new planetarium show "Saturn: New Discoveries" sold out for the first two weeks since its debut! We encourage you and your family to allow us to take you on a journey of discovery to this fascinating planet and its 34 moons! The show continues every Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM. To check out cool NASA images and learn about the ice geysers of Enceladus (one of Saturn's tiny moons) observed by the Cassini spacecraft during its Saturn fly-by go to : http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/scripts/articles/20060111/Note3.asp SMALL WORLD EXHIBIT ARRIVES FEBRUARY 17 Come witness the microscopic wonders of Nikon's Small World exhibit which showcases the 20 winning images from Nikon's International Photomicrography contest. All of the images can be seen on at least two levels – as artistic fusions of color and form, or as the wonders of scientific work captured and revealed in the microscope. Small World is on a national tour and will only be displayed at the Science Factory for one month, so make sure to stop by and view these amazing images! SPECIAL ACTIVITY: THREE CHEERS FOR ENGINEERS Come celebrate the achievements of engineers to kick off National Engineering Week! Local engineers will create a circus of hands-on engineering fun for you! Investigate some of the amazing aspects of the field of engineering. Discover projects and problem solving that engineers do in their work. Learn how engineering plays a part in our daily lives. Explore career possibilities as you meet real-life engineers! FORGET THE APPLE: GIVE YOUR TEACHER SOME REAL LOVE! The U.S. Department of Education plans to honor outstanding classroom teachers through the American Stars of Teaching program. The Department's Teacher-to-Teacher Initiative is seeking nominations and information about teachers who are improving student achievement, using innovative strategies in the classroom, and making a difference in the lives of their students. Teachers across all grade levels and disciplines will be honored this fall as 2006 American Stars of Teaching. Parents, students, colleagues, school administrators and others can nominate an exemplary teacher who they believe has the qualities to be an American Star of Teaching. One teacher will be recognized from each state.
