MEMBERS, YOU ARE SPECIAL! RECEIVE EARLY ENTRY TO NEW SCIENCE FACTORY FARE!

We're pulling out the stops for our members and opening up the museum early on Saturday, July 8 from 10 AM – 12 Noon .  You'll be the very FIRST visitors to have the fun of trying out our new Amusement Park Science Exhibit.  Spin on our momentum machine, delight in the wonders of a moving K'nex Ferris Wheel and Roller Coaster, then go on to build your own K'nex creation or try your hand at roller coaster design.  Learn the physics behind bumper car technology, then race your own bumper cars.

We're also launching our newest Planetarium show, “ Galaxies ” the same day, at a special members-only morning show at 11 AM.  Learn about the Milky Way and more!  “Galaxies” will show until October, but only on weekends at 2 PM.  Our “Up in the Stars” program will continue for younger audiences at 1 PM on weekends.

So, members, come early and stay late!  Your Science Factory membership is valuable to us, and we want to make sure you understand how much you are appreciated for supporting our efforts.

For those of you receiving this e-mail news who are not Science Factory members, consider joining!  A mere $50 provides you unlimited admission to the Exhibit Hall and Planetarium, subscriptions to our e-mail news and newsletter, discounts on camps, classes and birthday parties and, of course, free or reduced admission to over 250 museums nationally!  We still invite you to attend our wonderful new summer offerings, beginning July 8 at 12 Noon .  Hope to see you then!

The Amusement Park Science Exhibit will remain at the Science Factory until December 31.  The “Galaxies” Planetarium Show will remain until October 7

Summer Camps Sizzling – Look for the Mayor to Meet and Greet
To kick off our first week of camp, we've invited special Advisory Board member and Science Factory supporter, Mayor Kitty Piercy to meet and greet your campers.  The Mayor will be on hand our first day to talk about the importance of science education and to let kids know that they're early learning now is a serious investment for their future.  Of course, she'll be helping our teachers for a few moments in each of our classes.

Our camps all include hands-on activities, creative problem solving, outdoor play time in our beautiful park setting, and many field trips.  Tons of topics including  Kitchen Chemistry, Computer Fun & Games, Pirates & Vikings,  CSI:  Science Factory and more!  Many camps have closed and are wait-listed, so check in with our front desk staff to make sure you are signed up and confirmed for your camp.

We look forward to seeing you and your children this summer! We're real excited to have some wonderful new camp instructors this year, in addition to several returning instructors.  We're so organized this year that we intend to have available a list of all activities taking place in your child's camp for the week, just in case they forget what they have done or are doing!   As parents ourselves, we know how valuable it can be to have this information.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
To all the Science Factory individual and business supporters who participated in our non-event fundraiser by not showing up!

We raised over $5,000 for this low-cost fundraiser which will help provide additional funds for camp scholarships, museum programs and more. Make sure you put our non-event on your calendar for next year, or consider having your own personal real event by contributing either financially or volunteering to support the museum’s efforts.

Quack, Quack
The football machine is starting to rev up for fall and that means Duck Parking for us!  We're beginning to contact our former season parkers to make sure they renew for this year.  If you haven't used us for parking, consider this your banner year!  It's the sure-fire, no-headache way to get yourself straight to Autzen, with limited hassle.  And, of course, your football dollars help support our many programs.  Our continued thanks to the Elks Club for providing us with much-needed parking attendants for the fall.

Please spread the word to your friends who are Duck fans, as we hope to continue to increase our commitments for season parking this year.  The more the merrier, we say.  GO DUCKS!

News From the Great Beyond
Pluto has two more small moons, bringing its lunar count up to 3!

Discovered in 2005 by the Hubble Space Telescope, these two tiny moons have just been named Nix and Hydra. In mythology, Pluto was the god of the underworld. Souls were ferried across the river Styx to Pluto's land of the dead aboard a boat presided over by Charon (the name given to Pluto's largest moon.) Charon's mother was Nyx, the Greek goddess of the night.

(Unfortunately, the name Nyx has already been given to an asteroid, so instead, the Egyptian goddess of the night became the namesake for Nix.) Hydra was a nine-headed serpent whose home was the entrance to Pluto's domain.

Nix and Hydra were named by the International Astronomical Union, the only organization charged with providing official names for all celestial objects. For more information and a picture, check out:

Look for New KVAL PSA to Air Soon
Our many thanks to KVAL-TV, Advisory Board Member Jennifer Winters, Producer Chris Elliott and Executive Assistant Anne Olsen, who just completed production of a new Science Factory Public Service Announcement to begin airing this summer.  We are thrilled to have KVAL provide this wonderful opportunity to spread the word about the Science Factory and its activities.  Science Factory kid supporters who participated in the taping included:  Ardea Eichner, Solomon Landsberg, Leo Saenger, Sogi Yoon, the Acosta Children, and Kavin Wiiesekara.  They did a wonderful job of smiling, taking instruction, playing and learning about the makings of television ads.  Thanks so much everybody!

Beyond Helping Us Staple & Fold
Do you enjoy the Science Factory?  Do you believe that our area needs the best quality children's science museum it can get?  Do you think our children's museum should be able to compete with other areas the size of Eugene/Springfield for quality of experience, materials and overall technology?  We hope so, and we hope you can help us continue to strengthen the overall capacity of the Science Factory.

We are looking for your expertise or enthusiasm with the following Science Factory Committees:

EDUCATION :  Work on developing educational modules to be associated with our exhibits.   Assist in the development of materials, curriculum, exhibit signage and other educational components of the museum.  Contact:  Tracey Edmundson

FUNDRAISING :  Money talks.  Walk the walk.   Without an infusion of in-kind or monetary donations, the Science Factory cannot provide our many services, let alone improve upon them.  Our museum facility needs constant maintenance and operational revenue to keep up with growing demand for our services, including exhibits, instruction, camps, materials and costs. The planetarium is in dire need of technological upgrades – built in 1979, its system is not updated to present-day technological advances or ease of use.  Many of its computer programs are not happy. Your support can make the difference!  Help us as we continue to reach new members of our community for an overall improved museum experience. Contact:  Jerry Yu

MARKETING :  How can we continue to build public support and awareness of our museum?  Do you have an interest in reaching out to the community and develop promotional opportunities for the museum?  Marketing is your spot.  Contact:  Joyce Berman

EXHIBITS :  Are you interested in long-term planning for exhibit development?  Or are you handy and interested in developing some short-term exhibits for our use on our museum floor?  Whatever the case, our exhibit committee is looking for your skill and ideas.  Contact:  Tracey Edmundson.
