Three Eugene firefighters will be on hand to show off the fire truck and teach kids important lessons about fire safety and more. We’ll also be making animal tracks to learn about animal movement, playing red light/green light and more!

FEE for entry, Members Free.

Bike Day
Kick off the summer cycling season at the Science Factory. Ride or bring your bike for a day of fun! Take a ride on the bike obstacle course, be a part of a crazy race, explore the physics of bicycles with hands-on experiments, or decorate your bike for a crazy bike parade! Experts will be on hand to share information including which city roads are most bike friendly and ways to get more involved in fun bicycling activities in our community!

Tons of activities: silly bike races, bike safety checks, registration for People Powered Fridays, Safe Ways to School and more!

Our thanks to the City of Eugene (Public Works, Transportation Division) for assisting and cosponsoring this event.

Astronomy Day Takes You to the Universe and Back Again!
To the moon and beyond! Check out the vast array of telescopes for sale and talk to experts about their capabilities. Astronomy Day, Saturday, May 6, promises to be fun for all.

Events include:
• Solar Viewing
• Telescope Raffle
• Expert Lectures
• Star Party (weather permitting)
• Hands-on Children’s Activities
• Two Planetarium Shows ($4 each)

Learn about light pollution and astrophotography! Plans are for a sunset Star Party beginning at 7 PM. We will be looking through telescopes to see the rings of Saturn, the storms on Jupiter, and also talk with experts and examine astronomy items on display. Co-sponsored by our friends at the Eugene Astronomical Society, the day promises to be out-of-this-world!

Heard about a Non-Event? It’s the Most Fun You’ll Never Have!
Science Factory members and supporters should look in their mail in the next week for an invitation to our non-event! What’s a non-event? Well, it’s an event that doesn’t take place so you don’t have to be bothered with it. Our non-event will NOT feature Sally Ride, Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates. It WON’T be hosted by Walter Cronkite, anchor to the Apollo moon launch. And guess what? You don’t have to come! In fact, you don’t have to make idle conversation with strangers, or spend money on a fancy outfit you’ll never wear again ($100), or hire a babysitter ($25). All you do have to do is…..you guessed it, financially support the Science Factory! Look for full details on our website or in your mailbox. And if you don’t receive an invitation, don’t consider yourself not invited. Call us, and we’ll send you one!

Don’t Duck & Cover – Go Outside and Look!
A comet is coming! In the early morning hours of May 12, 13 and 14, you will see a very unusual comet in the eastern sky before sunrise. Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 has actually broken apart into a number of mini-comets. Because these are mini-comets, you will need to get away from the light pollution of the cities and escape into the darker countryside. You will also need to choose a location with a good view of the eastern horizon – and take along your binoculars. Watch for the comet fragments as they pass through the constellations of Cygnus and Pegasus. These mini-comets will not be spectacular like Comet Hale-Bopp was in 1997, but do present a rare opportunity to see a comet in its death throes since the comet is disintegrating as it approaches the sun.

For more information, finder’s charts, and pictures of Comet 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3, check out NASA’s article at http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/24mar_73p.htm?list147068

Summer Camps Filling Up
"Be prepared."
"Fail to plan, plan to fail."
"The early bird catches the worm."

Our summer camps are more fun than your kids can have in one place. Tons of topics including Kitchen Chemistry, Computer Fun & Games, Pirates & Vikings, CSI: Science Factory and more! We are accepting registrations now, with forms posted on our website. Additionally, forms should be available at the Eugene and Springfield Public Libraries, at local schools and other city buildings. No time like the present to register, as we hate to turn folks away because of lack of space.

Some acclaim for Science Factory summer camps from last year:

Our first camp in Eugene! Great instructors – interesting curriculum (we had a difficult time deciding which camp to choose). We previously attended UC-Berkeley Lawrence Hall of Science camps and yours were just as enjoyable! Good job!

Beyond Helping Us Staple & Fold
Do you enjoy the Science Factory? Do you believe that our area needs the best quality children’s science museum it can get? Do you think our children’s museum should be able to compete with other areas the size of Eugene/Springfield for quality of experience, materials and overall technology? We hope so, and we hope you can help us continue to strengthen the overall capacity of the Science Factory.

We are looking for your expertise or enthusiasm with the following Science Factory Committees:

EDUCATION: Work on developing educational modules to be associated with our exhibits. Assist in the development of materials, curriculum, exhibit signage and other educational components of the museum. Contact: Tracey Edmundson

FUNDRAISING: Money talks. Walk the walk. Without an infusion of in-kind or monetary donations, the Science Factory cannot provide our many services, let alone improve upon them. Our museum facility needs constant maintenance and operational revenue to keep up with growing demand for our services, including exhibits, instruction, camps, materials and costs. The planetarium is in dire need of technological upgrades – built in 1979, its system is not updated to present-day technological advances or ease of use. Many of its computer programs are not happy. Your support can make the difference! Help us as we continue to reach new members of our community for an overall improved museum experience. Contact: Jerry Yu

MARKETING: How can we continue to build public support and awareness of our museum? Do you have an interest in reaching out to the community and develop promotional opportunities for the museum? Marketing is your spot. Contact: Joyce Berman

EXHIBITS: Are you interested in long-term planning for exhibit development? Or are you handy and interested in developing some short-term exhibits for our use on our museum floor? Whatever the case, our exhibit committee is looking for your skill and ideas. Contact: Tracey Edmundson.

Sportsology Leaving Shortly
Hurry! Time is almost out to experience the fun activities of Sportsology! Come check out the multitude of hands-on challenges and interactive exhibits that encourage exploration and experimentation in discovering the science behind sports. Slated to leave on June 19. Look here for further updates on incoming exhibits….we’re hush-hush until final exhibit agreements have been made, but we’re certain it will engage, excite and inspire!

Annual Membership Meeting
All Science Factory members are hereby notified that the Annual Meeting of Members will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at 5:30 p.m. at the Science Factory. The purpose of the meeting is the election of directors. For more information, please contact Jerry Yu, Executive Director.

SAVE THE DATES!
Buy books at Barnes and Noble during the hot pre-Father’s Day bookselling season. From June 10th -16th, Barnes and Noble will donate a percent of your purchase to the Science Factory when you present your bookfair voucher. Purchase your kids’ summer reading list and support the museum as well. Voucher can be downloaded from our website at www.sciencefactory.org.

Did You Notice?
Those fun kids that made their way onto the lampposts on Ferry Street Bridge? Actually, they were Science Factory banners that we hope gave folks a good look at what the Science Factory is becoming….the best place in town for your one-stop family-friendly learning activities. Hope they provided an opportunity for you to talk to people about us, because we need your word-of-mouth advertising to help beef up our expanding admissions! Many thanks to newly-named and soon moving Imagine Design (formerly Signs of the Times) for providing us with a hefty discount on the banners. In the ongoing thanks department for services rendered, we’d also like to thank Oregon Living Television for providing us with a wonderful up-close look at our programs on the many television stations they serve. Thanks!

Quack, Quack
Don’t forget about Duck Parking! We’re starting to see a run on our season parking. The sure-fire, no-headache way to get yourselves straight to Autzen. And, your football dollars help support our many programs. Our continued thanks to the Elks for providing us with much-needed parker assistants during the craziness that awaits us in the fall.
