MAGIC SCHOOL BUS CLASSES: NEW POLICY
We’re trying to accommodate your needs for some flexibility and interest for our Magic School Bus classes. So this month, we’ll be opening up the classes to those who have not pre-registered, on a drop-in basis. Early registrants receive a price break for planning ahead! Drop-in visitors to our classes can attend one or more than one, but will be charged $12 (members) or $15 (non-members) for each two-hour session for Grades K-2 on Wednesdays, 2:30 – 4:30 PM. Simple Machines (November 8) and Inventions (November 15) will be the topics for November. Classes will have a maximum enrollment of 15, so by not planning ahead and registering, you are not assured a place in the class. But, we are trying to meet some visitor’s interest in attending the classes when they have come to the museum and the class is not full. Let us know if this works for you!

HALLOWEEN EVENTS CATAPULT SCIENCE FACTORY TO NEW HEIGHTS
Our two Halloween events doubled your pleasure this year. We had great turnouts at both events and plenty of screams, chills, smiles and flying pumpkins to go all around.

Naomi’s mom made this pine cone costume out of grocery bags!
So many people worked very hard to help us put on this annual celebration. We must thank Jenn Shelton, Science Factory Instructor, for coordinating and managing the entire event with aplomb! Special thanks to Laura Highsmith, who volunteered to assist with sponsorships and organization. Additional volunteers included: Dillon Miles, Kate Hanneman, Gay Check, Kristen Parker, Megan Briggs, Allen Shelton, Ben & Sebastian Elstrott, Austen Gussenhoven, Jasper Newton.

Sponsors for the Halloween Extravaganza included: Bi-Mart Corp., Northern Lights Christmas Tree Farm, University of Oregon Undergrad Research Club , the Eugene Generals Hockey Team, Clear Channel Radio, Wal-Mart and Hentze Farms. Thank you so much for supporting this ever-expanding event.

Special mentions to our costume contest winners: Kanobe Boosinger, Ben Mihulka, Naomi Friedman, Conner Beard and Alexander Kollars! FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS, IT’S A SOLAR SYSTEM EVENT WORTH NOTING
On Wednesday, November 8, from 11:12 a.m. until 4:10 p.m., Mercury will pass between the Sun and the Earth in an event known as a transit. Since Mercury is 194 times smaller than the Sun, only people with telescopes that have at least 50X to 100X magnification and are equipped with a solar filter can directly view this event. (It is not safe to observe the Sun without a specially-designed solar filter, and extremely dangerous to attempt to observe the Sun through a telescope without a solar filter in perfect condition. If you have any doubt about the condition of your solar filter do not use it and do not attempt to observe the Sun!!!)

For those of us without telescopes, you can view the transit online at http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/

Transits of planets are very rare. From Earth, the only planets that ever transit the Sun are Mercury and Venus. The other planets are beyond Earth’s orbit and will never pass between the Sun and the Earth, as do Mercury and Venus. A transit of Mercury occurs only about 13 times in a century, and a transit of Venus is far more rare, occurring only twice in more than a century.

More information can be found at http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/20oct_transitofmercury.htm

AURORA: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
Photo: Aurora BorealisThe spectacular, awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis is a natural occurrence created when solar particles collide with gas molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere. It occurs in our own Oregon sky up to 10 times per year. Learn the origins, peculiarities, and best times and places to see the Aurora in this fascinating show, continuing through January. The show continues every weekend on Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM.

Planetarium Director Sue Peterson has created this show to entertain and enlighten. All of our shows are live and interactive and the audience has a chance to ask questions of Sue after her presentation. Try and stump her!
