Science Education Programs Expanding at Science Factory How can the Science Factory continue to expand and reach the many children who would so greatly benefit from our programs? We have launched a special three-year project to expand programs and services for children and youth in Lane County and surrounding areas. Connecting Children to Science will serve 100% more children by the end of the third year. The project will also strengthen programs and provide higher-quality exhibits, planetarium shows, and educational materials. In 2004, the Science Factory touched roughly 10% of the primary service target in Lane County . The project’s purpose is to expand programs to double this figure to 20%. The project includes expansion of the Science Education Scholarship program, which provides fee reductions based on need. Over three years (2005-07), the project plan calls for expanding all science education program enrollments by a combined 100%. Programs include: School Field Trips, After-school Workshops, Summer Science Camps, Special Programs, School Vacation/Holiday Programs, and a program for preschoolers and their parents. Over the project period, a total of 31,220 children will be served, an increase of 12,431 children. Upon completion, the Science Factory’s programs will have been effectively doubled from 6,263 to 12,525. Year I (2005) results were very encouraging with positive feedback from children, parents, and teachers. As anticipated, 8,320 children enrolled vs. 6,263 children in 2004 – an increase of 2,057 children or 33%. For the first half of Year II (2006), enrollments were again higher and on-track to serve another 33% more children for the year. The project’s goal for Year III (2007) is to complete the program expansion to serve still another 33% more children. If achieved, then the Science Factory’s service to children will have been expanded by 100%! FUNDRAISER FOR PLANETARIUM FRIEND A fundraiser is being held for Fred Domineack, former president of Eugene Astronomical Society and long-time amateur astronomer. Some of you may remember Fred at one of the star parties, or volunteer events outside the Planetarium/Science Factory ~ he was a big part of these for many years. He has spent numerous hours sharing wonders of the night sky with many local people and visitors to U of O's Pine Mtn. observatory. Fred suffered a major brain aneurysm in March, and is currently recovering in Cincinnati under care of family there. Friends are hoping to raise funds in order to assist his family with his ongoing care and recovery. The fundraiser will be at Papa's Pizza at 1577 Coburg Rd. and will run all day this coming Monday, September 11th. To participate, you must bring the attached flyer with you to Papa's, so that Papa's will donate 50% of food purchases directly to the Fred Domineack Benefit Fund. Flyers are available at Dot Dotson's Camera shop near 16th & Willamette . Please consider coming to Papa's Sept. 11th (with your flyer) and join with local astronomers to support Fred and his family.
