Consider multitasking and doing your holiday shopping in our museum store while you visit. Hope to see you on Saturday, December 2 from noon – 4 PM.

READING ROOM MOVES OUT

Don Lown, volunteer on behalf of the Kiwanis Club, helps disassemble our reading room to make way for the Bone up on Bones exhibit.
With the help of our friends at the Kiwanis Club, we’re moving the reading room to create more space for our new exhibit, Bone Up On Bones (coming from OMSI!). We’ll find a replacement area for reading real soon, after a brief respite. Many thanks to Kiwanis volunteers Don Lown, Ray Hull, Bob Sanders and Don Leslie for working to dismantle the room and cleanup the hall to make way for our new exhibit. And by the way, you might want to check out Don Lown in the Eugene Weekly this week, featured as one of its “Happening People.” We always knew this was the case, but glad to see it confirmed in print.

GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE…
Thanks to our classroom remodeling project, we have an array of software, cabinets, lumber, and other goodies up for grabs. Come in, check it out and make us an offer. Soon to be picked up by BRING Recycling, so do not tarry.

METAMORPHOSIS: UPDATE
Metamorphosis The makeover has begun! Our well-loved classroom is in for a completely new and updated look. We’re in the process of installing new storage units, flooring, paint, lights, a child-friendly sink, and much more thanks to those who donated over $78,000 in donations, including a rather lovely $25,000 grant from the Ann & Bill Swindells Charitable Trust. Now, volunteers of all skill and strength levels are needed to help get the job done. (How many community service hours does your high school student still need?)

We continue to thank the many donations and supporters of the project along the way:
SELCO Community Credit Union, Swindells Charitable Trust, Jerry’s Home Improvement, Bi-Mart, Chuck Bailey, AIA, McKenzie Commercial, Twin Rivers Plumbing, Gale Roberts Construction, Rubenstein’s Contract Carpet, Country Coach, Gibson Steel, Singer Foundation, ATEZ Asbestos, Triton Electric, Liberty Bank, Boles Concrete, Weyerhaeuser, Dari Mart, Lithia Chrysler Dodge of Eugene, Sanipac, Oregon Community Credit Union, Forrest Paint, Advance Cabinet Designs, K Ridley Technology, Pacific Source, Monaco Coach Corporation, Authohaus, FedEx/Kinko’s, Central Print, Forefront Designs, Pacitifc Continental Bank, West Coast Bank, Alice Parmen, The Top Shop, Larry Culop, Saul Wold.

We could not have done this project without you!

For more information about the project or how to volunteer and donate, please contact Interim Executive Director Joyce Berman at joyceb@sciencefactory.org or 682-7882.

YOU’RE NEEDED
Don’t think we haven’t noticed your cheerful manner, your upbeat attitude, or your diligent sense of community. Because we have. And, we’d love for you to be a part of our team because we know your help will make our events, classes, and programs run smooth and easy. Download a volunteer application form and expect a quick call from Amanda Garlick, Volunteer Coordinator. Amanda has been working as an Admissions Clerk, but will also be our contact person for all of our volunteer needs. Amanda has previously worked in this capacity for other non-profits locally, so we know you are in competent hands.

YOUR OWN PRIVATE GUIDE

Austin Oostema, 9 and Jared Bauer, 7, cousins from Kalispell, Montana constructed their own spaceships for special Winter Break Space Science Days.
A docent program is being created for the BONE UP ON BONES exhibit where you can enjoy the company of a trained volunteer who will guide you through the exhibit, bringing to life the most interesting and almost-unbelievable facts found mingled among the exciting interactive elements. Initiated by super volunteer Kristen Anderson, the docent program is an exciting new development at the museum. Want to be part of the docent program? Call us today to get involved.

FIELD TRIPS JUST GOT BETTER
We appreciate teachers and want to help out where we can. So, we’ve designed our new field trip guide to work around science benchmarks to encourage the most effective learning opportunities. Additionally, since the Bone Up on Bones exhibit is slated to leave in early May, we encourage all teachers to schedule their field trips early this year!

LEADERSHIP CHANGES
We note the recent departure of Jerry Yu, Executive Director, who contributed countless hours to the museum and helped organize it efficiently and effectively. Jerry departed after a mutual agreement with the Board of Directors. In the meantime, please re-welcome Joyce Berman as our Interim Executive Director. Joyce has been working as the Science Factory’s Marketing Director, in a part-time capacity, prior to accepting her new post. Welcome Joyce and good luck!

VOLUNTEER(S) OF THE MONTH
No question, we have to name two wonderful gentlemen who are agreeing to help with the many pressing needs of the museum during our transition period. Ray Hull, chair of our Education Committee and former Executive Director of WISTEC, and Jack O’Donnell, our former Board Chairman, are dutifully coming in to the museum to assist with so many of our needs. Ray has already helped garner grant funds for the museum in addition to assisting with classification for United Way ’s provider program and Jack O’Donnell has been pitching in for almost project currently underway. Our heartfelt thanks to these two incredible salt-of-the-earth fellows.

EWEB FUNDS SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS AND NEW EXHIBITS
More good news: EWEB has funded the Science Factory to develop three new “rolling demonstration carts” to assist in educating children about energy. These wonderful new additions to our museum’s staple will allow us the flexibility to provide some much-needed information to supplement a wonderful new exhibit slated to open in May on energy conservation. The focus of these exhibits will include alternative energy, energy conservation and the overall nature of energy and electricity. In addition, EWEB has funded educational supplementary material to the exhibits and the development of curriculum for our summer camp program.

Many thanks to John Femal and EWEB for their assistance in securing these funds for the museum.

OTHER FUNDING NEWS
We’re thrilled to report that the Science Factory has received a $10,000 grant from the Cow Creed Umpqua Indian Foundation, $5,000 from Weyerhaueser for our remodel project and $5,000 from the Chambers Family Foundation. These funds are much needed and much appreciated.

MORE BRIGHT SPOTS
Symantec Corporation has donated seven Think Pad laptop computers to the Science Factory. We are hoping that these wonderful new additions will be used in our brand new classroom and for additional computer classes at the museum. Many thanks to Symantec, with particular hats off to Natasha Osborn, Community Relations & Employee Events Specialist, for assisting in this effort.

SPEAKING OF BRIGHT SPOTS…..AURORA: THE NORTHERN LIGHTS
The spectacular, awe-inspiring Aurora Borealis is a natural occurrence created when solar particles collide with gas molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere. It occurs in our own Oregon sky up to 10 times per year. Learn the origins, peculiarities, and best times and places to see the Aurora in this fascinating show, continuing through January 13. The show continues every weekend on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Planetarium Director Sue Peterson has created this show to entertain and enlighten. All of our shows are live and interactive and the audience has a chance to ask questions of Sue after her presentation. Try and stump her!
