THIRSTY FOR KNOWLEDGE?
Science Factory is collaborating with OMSI and the University of Oregon to help sponsor a new Science Pub monthly event at  Luna, a lounge and restaurant in downtown Eugene. Find out about advances in science and technology from leading researchers and scientists, all while enjoying food and beverages. No scientific background is required: just bring your curiosity, sense of humor, and appetite for food, drinks, and knowledge! There was a large and enthusiastic audience of 150 people for the first Science Pub event in June, so the new lecture series is off to a great start!

The second in this new series is on July 12 at 7:00 pm with "Will the iPod Generation Be Deaf?" with Dr. Billy Martin, Professor of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU).

The iPod has become a cultural icon with more than 100 million iPods having been sold worldwide. Lawsuits, rumors, accusations are flying around about the role of iPods in the current epidemic of noise-induced hearing losses, especially among young people. Sure, loud sound must be able to damage ears, but how much sound is required? Can iPods or other personal stereo systems cause deafness? What can I do to save my ears?

Dr. Billy Martin is a world-renowned hearing scientist who deals with all kinds of noise that affects our community. He leads a team of Portland area scientists, educators, clinicians, public health experts and others in the study of noise induced hearing loss and tinnitus prevention. Dr. Martin will talk about the dangerous noises in our every day life - what they are, what damage they cause, and how to protect yourself...iPods included.

Presentation begins at 7:00 pm on July 12 and will last around 1.5 to 2 hours. Come early if you want to order food and drinks! Where: Luna, 30 E. Broadway, Eugene, http://www.lunajazz.com/ .

The Science Pub is held every second Thursday of the month and is open to anyone and everyone. No RSVP is necessary. Please feel free to pass this on to your friends and colleagues, and we hope to see you there!

For more info about Billy, visit http://www.ohsu.edu/ohrc/staff/martin/martin.html .

ENERGY AND TRAIN EXHIBITS CONTINUE
Kids can get energized about energy at the Flex Your Power exhibit that looks at energy using an array of informative and interactive displays.

The central feature of the Electrical Energy exhibit is the energy conservation kiosk that was generously purchased for the Science Factory by the Eugene Water and Electric Board. The exhibit's features emphasize the dual benefits of energy conservation to preserve limited natural resources and as a way to save money.

In conjunction with the energy exhibit, a large-scale model train display offers its own lesson about energy. The train exhibit features multiple trains taking turns powering over a bridge and through a town. The two large-scale trains are roughly twice the size of the Lionel trains that many people have seen. There are operating semaphore signals, and the large-size trains allow onboard sound systems and other operating details not usually found on smaller scale models. The display will evolve over time as scenic elements to the set-up are added by members of the Emerald Empire Garden Railway Society, who we would like to thank for this display.

PLANETARIUM SHOWS NOW AVAILABLE DURING SUMMER WEEKDAYS, TOO!
This summer you might decide to attend a planetarium show after picking up your child at camp or just because you want to! From June 27-August 19, we'll be offering public shows Wednesday - Friday, in addition to our weekend shows at 1 pm and 2 pm. The 1 pm show, Up in the Sky, will show you how to find the visible planets, bright stars and major constellations that you can see in the sky at night. The 2 pm show will change each month. The current 2 pm show is Different Light, an exploration of what we have learned by looking at our universe in types of light such as infrared and ultraviolet that our eyes cannot see. Due to technical difficulties with an antiquated sound system, Ice and Iron will not begin on July 7 as planned but will begin about two weeks later. Ice and Iron is a look at comets and asteroids and the danger they pose for Earth. In August, the Galaxies program will explore the wonders of galaxies and find out what they are, what types of galaxies exist, and even what happens when galaxies collide. Get starry eyed and enjoy a summer planetarium show mid-week! Please note that the Planetarium will be closed for its annual maintenance on June 18 - 22.

THANK YOU TO DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS
The generous donations of time and funding to the Science Factory from our supporters enable the museum to do everything that we do, and we are very thankful for that support. This month we would like to thank the following supporters:

Casey Woodard and the Woodard Family Foundation and the Doyle and Donna Shepherd Foundation for their recent grants to the Science Factory. Both of these grants will help to expand the Science Factory's field trip program that brings groups of schoolchildren to the museum for hands-on learning about science.

The city of Eugene
for donating binders to the museum.

Sara Pritt, our wonderful webmaster, for donating the program now used to create the E-News you are reading

United Way and the Oregon Bach Festival for providing Bach Festival tickets that the Science Factory distributed to families in need

Thompson Landscape continues to donate grass cutting service to the museum

Thank you all for your generosity and care for the Science Factory.

SEEKING SPONSORS FOR FALL EXHIBIT:
Fun, 2, 3, 4 - all about a number of things!

Whether it's measuring, graphing or estimating, this traveling math exhibition shows visitors the fun of applying math to everyday activities. Learn how to double your allowance, count like the Aztecs, or team up with a partner to take our time challenge.

This is a great exhibit, and we are very fortunate to have received a challenge grant to cover half of the exhibit cost. To cover the other half, we're counting on you. If you're interested in supporting this math exhibit, contact Joyce Berman at 682-7887. For more information about sponsorship benefits, visit our online info at http://www.sciencefactory.org/join/become_sponsor.shtml . If making a donation to sponsor this exhibit, please note with your donation that it is to meet the challenge grant.

EARLY HANDS-ON STUDY OF SCIENCE GENERATES LONGTERM INTEREST
A recent report urges science educators to encourage their elementary and high school students to engage in hands-on activities as they learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Researchers concluded that such students, when they enter two- or four year colleges, will likely take part in hands-on research and pursue advanced degrees in the STEM disciplines. The National Science Foundation underwrote a series of surveys to determine undergraduates' interest and experience. Students reported that their experiences in performing actual research projects not only produced positive learning but also stimulated their desire to pursue graduate work.

SAY YES TO RSVP
Volunteering helps to build community and solve serious social problems. And, according to research, it can also improve your physical and mental health!

The Science Factory and the United Way of Lane County are now partners in RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of the United Way. RSVP volunteers must be at least 55 years of age. They are able to put their unique talents to work for community and faith-based organizations that are significant to them. In addition, they receive the following benefits:

  • Pre-service orientation
  • On-the-job training for the agency or organization where you decide to volunteer
  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Supplemental insurance while on duty
To sign up as a volunteer at the Science Factory through this program, contact RSVP at 741-6000.
