BUGS! A RAINFOREST ADVENTURE
Impeccably narrated by Dame Judi Dench, this fascinating 40-minute full-dome movie draws you close into the intimate world of insects. Viewers are invited to see how the jungle in Borneo looks from an insect's vantage point, and to "...imagine a place where raindrops fall like cannon balls and a blade of grass soars like a skyscraper..."1 Although you'll see many amazing close-ups, such as male rhinoceros beetles battling over a female and a leopard gecko stalking his prey, the movie primarily chronicles the lives of Papilio, a butterfly, and Hierodula, a praying mantis, from hatching through adulthood, and their eventual dramatic encounter in the rainforest. See the trailer.
OUR CHANGING SKY Playing Sundays: May 4, May 18, June 1, June 8, June 15 at 1 pm.
The Sun seems to move across the sky, the Moon changes its phase, the planets move across the backdrop of the stars and even the stars shift their positions with the night and the seasons. We will explore these celestial movements and discover their causes. Presented live by Susan Peterson, Planetarium Director.
STARS AND CONSTELLATIONS OF THE SOUTHERN SKY Playing Sundays: May 12 and June 9 at 1 pm.
The early Polynesians traveled across the vast Pacific Ocean using only the waves, wind and stars to guide them. Some of these stars are not visible to us and can only be seenby traveling to the southern hemisphere. Join us as we learn about these constellations and how the Polynesians used the stars to navigate across the trackless ocean. Presented live by Rick Nelson, Planetarium Volunteer.
S.E.T.I. - THE SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE
The prospect that we may not be alone in the universe is portrayed by the movies, writers and a great many scientists. As yet, we have no hard evidence of another living thing outside Planet Earth. This dome show explores all sides of this topic, from the planets we are finding around other stars, to the feasibility of traveling to the stars, and what aliens might actually be like, to the possibility that UFO's have been visiting and the various methods that scientists are using to get in touch. Will we make contact in our lifetimes? This stunning immersive show guides you through the myriad of ideas to a surprising conclusion. Most suitable for ages 5 & up.
BLACK HOLES: THE OTHER SIDE OF INFINITY
Narrated by Liam Neeson, this 24-minute full-dome movie features immersive animations of cosmic phenomena created in order to bring the science of black holes to the dome screen. Encounter spectacular cosmic wonders as you wander deep space — the beginning of the universe, the formation of stars, a collision of two galaxies — then experience a breathtaking journey as you are drawn inside of a simulated super-massive black hole lurking at the center of our own Milky Way Galaxy! Produced by Thomas Lucas Productions in collaboration with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, NOVA and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Most suitable for ages 8 and up.
SEA MONSTERS: A PREHISTORIC ADVENTURE
What lived in the water during the dinosaur age? Funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation, the film weaves together photorealistic animation with standout finds from paleontological digs around the world — treasures that shed light on the film's incredible cast of characters. From fossil digs to larger-than-life visions of predatory chases in shallow seas, the film immerses audiences in a rarely explored environment during the dinosaur age. See the trailer. Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure at the Science Factory is made possible by the Anonymous Fund of the Toledo Community Foundation, and the J. Glenn an d Ellen A. Cougill Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation.
